Local councils say that security shutters can be visually unattractive and can create a ‘dead’ hostile appearance. Government guidance suggests that they may even increase crime to areas by attracting graffiti and thus creating a no go atmosphere which then in turn reduces natural surveillance.
This is why Euroll spent over a year designing the crystal clear polycarbonate shutter. Local councils are increasingly accepting these types of shutters when put forward for planning permission. Transparent shutters give the shop front the same security barrier as a conventional shutter whilst allowing the shop to be viewed when the shutter is down. The installation of roller shutters or grilles to the exterior of a shop front or window constitutes development under the planning legislation and therefore will require the owner or tenant to gain planning permission from the local authority. Internal shutters do not normally need planning permission however if the building is listed or the building is in a conservation area then planning may be needed.
Please email us if you are unsure if planning permission is required and we will investigate the planning laws on your behalf.
